In writer-director Todd Haynes' ''Safe,'' Julianne Moore played a well-to-do suburban housewife whose life was thrown into turmoil by illness. She'll play a similar role in Haynes' ''Far From Heaven,'' a drama set in the conformist 1950s. This time, what disrupts her life is the revelation that her husband (Dennis Quaid) is having a gay affair, her discovery of which throws her into the arms of her African-American gardener (Dennis Haysbert). Shooting begins next week in New Jersey....

Martin Scorsese's ''Gangs of New York,'' with Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz, seemed like surefire Oscar bait a month ago. Now, however, Miramax seems to be having second thoughts about releasing a violent Manhattan epic (albeit one set in the 19th century) in the current climate. The studio has pushed up ''Kate and Leopold,'' starring Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman, to December 21, which was to have been ''Gangs''' release date. Plus, the cut Scorsese has shown to Miramax is reportedly three hours long, and since it's unlikely that studio chief Harvey Weinstein will want to release a movie of that length, there may not be enough time left to edit it for a 2001 release....
