It was 18-year-old Robert Schwartzman, who plays keyboards and guitar in a band called Rooney and costarred as a garage musician and love interest to Anne Hathaway in ''The Princess Diaries.'' But he's probably better known for his family connections: His mother is Talia Shire, his brother is ''Rushmore'''s Jason Schwartzman, his cousins are Nicolas Cage and Sofia Coppola, and his uncle is Francis Ford Coppola....
Savage Garden, probably the least savage Australian pop duo since Air Supply, is breaking up. Best known for the 1998 ballad ''Truly, Madly, Deeply,'' Gardeners Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones sold 20 million albums. ''We achieved something so great in a short period of time that we had to look for something else,'' Jones tells Reuters. ''We've both had a lot of success together. We'll probably have a lot of success independently in the future.''
TUBE TALK Jay Leno had an unusual guest on Wednesday's ''Tonight Show'': his wife. Calling her ''the smartest person I've ever known in my life,'' he introduced Mavis Leno, who's been popping up on TV a lot lately to discuss the oppresion of women in Afghanistan under the Taliban. As a member of the Feminist Majority Foundation, she has been calling attention to the Taliban's human rights abuses for four years, well before most Americans had heard of Osama bin Laden. Mrs. Leno, who also appeared on the show two years ago, urged the U.S. government to press for a constitutional democracy in Afghanistan, even as the military prepares for a strike against the current regime....
George Gray, star of the TLC series ''Junkyard Wars,'' has been named host of the syndicated version of NBC's ''Weakest Link.'' The daytime show, which debuts in January, will cost a lot less than the primetime version; it'll be only a half hour long, it will have six contestants instead of eight, and it'll offer a jackpot well below the $1 million on the nighttime show. Gray will even wear the same black suit as nighttime host Anne Robinson. Well, not the same exact suit; that would be a little too cost-conscious....
