But even if moviegoers are scared away from frightening films in the near future, ''From Hell'''s directors, the Hughes Brothers -- who also racked up body counts in ''Menace II Society'' and ''Dead Presidents'' -- aren't likely to retire their blood squibs any time soon. Though they admit that 20th Century Fox held a test screening after Sept. 11 to gauge whether audiences might be offended by the movie's subject matter, they chalk up such concerns to oversensitivity.
''There are some movies that are gratuitously violent and cheesy and campy and maybe they shouldn't be,'' concedes Albert Hughes. ''But should we change the way we make movies in light of recent events? Wait a minute! In the last 10 to 15 years there have been a massive amount of people killed and bombed all around the world and nobody seemed to care about them. So just because we got struck here, we're supposed to change? People die every day.''
