Maybe the Pentagon should host the next Trekkie convention. Recent news reports reveal that U.S. military radio broadcasts in Afghanistan included this warning to the Taliban: ''Resistance is futile.'' As legions of ''Star Trek'' fans know, that phrase was used by the Borg in a 1990 episode of ''Star Trek: The Next Generation.'' ''It wasn't a conscious quote from 'Star Trek,''' insists Pentagon spokesman Lieut. Col. George Rhynedance. ''In the context of war, it's a very common phrase.'' But that's not the military's only ''Trek'' connection: Personnel aboard the USS Enterprise in the Indian Ocean have been enjoying tapes of UPN's aptly named new ''Trek'' series.
