PASSING NOTES Grigory Chukhrai, a world-renowned Soviet filmmaker best known for World War II-themed movies like ''Ballad of a Soldier'' (1959) and ''The Clear Sky'' (1961), died Sunday at 80 of undisclosed causes at a Moscow hospital. Born in Ukraine, Chukhrai served as a Soviet paratrooper during the war before turning to films that tended to praise the heroism of individual soldiers while subtly criticizing the arbitrary injustice of Stalinist politics. His son is Russian writer/director Pavel Chukhrai, whose 1997 movie ''The Thief'' was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
