SOUND BITES Did you know a-ha were still around, and not just as a jokey falsetto ringing out from Chris Kattan's car radio in ''Corky Romano''? The 1980s synth-pop relics will be performing in Oslo at Dec. 11's Nobel Peace Prize concert, honoring this year's winner, United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan. (Guess there aren't a whole lot of other well-known bands in Norway.) Also on the bill are Paul McCartney, Wyclef Jean, Natalie Imbruglia, and Youssou N'Dour....

If you were a performer, and your agent called and said, ''I've got you a great gig: it's in Utah in the dead of winter, you can't perform your latest hit, and you won't get paid,'' would you take the job? You would if it were the Feb. 24, 2002, closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and if you were 'N Sync, Christina Aguilera, Bon Jovi, Harry Connick Jr., Charlotte Church, or Savion Glover. Note to Christina: It gets very cold in Utah in February, so you might want to cover your midriff.

PASSING NOTES British director Ray Boulting, who helped launch the careers of Peter Sellers (in ''I'm All Right, Jack'') and Richard Attenborough (in ''Brighton Rock''), died Monday at 87. He may have been better known for his notorious affair with ''Parent Trap'' star Hayley Mills, which started when he was 54 and she was a 20-year-old actress starring in his 1966 film ''The Family Way.'' They married five years later and made several more films together, but they were later divorced....

Playwright Anthony Shaffer, best known for the long-running Broadway hit ''Sleuth'' (source of the 1972 Michael Caine-Laurence Olivier movie), died of a heart attack at his London home at age 75. Shaffer also wrote screenplays, notably, for ''The Wicker Man'' and Alfred Hitchcock's ''Frenzy.'' He was the twin brother of playwright Peter Shaffer (''Amadeus,'' ''Equus'').
