America's Sweethearts (2001)

Details Release Date: Nov 13, 2001; Movie Rated: PG-13; Genre: Comedy; With: Billy Crystal, John Cusack, Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones; Distributor: Columbia Pictures

Bearing a striking resemblance to ''Singin' in the Rain,'' America's Sweethearts has John Cusack and Catherine Zeta-Jones trying on the Gene Kelly and Jean Hagen roles, a famous Hollywood couple on their way to Splitsville, while wallflower Julia Roberts is the Debbie Reynolds who gets her man by movie's end. Even though there's no dancing in ''Sweethearts'' -- and nowhere near as much charm -- both movies make no apologies for taking jabs at the Hollywood machine. Cusack's debonair fop may fall far short of Kelly's, but watching Roberts pine over him is nothing short of heartbreaking.
