We know Harry Potter has a nice forehead scar. But how are his legs?
That question should be answered this weekend, as ''Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'' follows its record-breaking $90.3 million opening with a lucrative five-day holiday weekend. How will the little guy fare in his second act? Last year, Jim Carrey's ''How the Grinch Stole Christmas,'' which opened with $55.1 million the weekend before Thanksgiving, grossed a mammoth $73.5 million over the holiday. So look for ''Harry Potter,'' which had more of a manic first-weekend following than ''The Grinch,'' to bring in another $90 mil or so.
But there are two big new films that should earn serious dollars as well. Robert Redford and Brad Pitt team up for the sharp CIA thriller ''Spy Game,'' in which agent Redford has 24 hours to free protégé Pitt from a Chinese prison. Last year, the Bruce Willis drama ''Unbreakable'' debuted with $46 million over the five-day span. But that film was rated PG-13, while ''Spy Game'' is an audience-limiting R. Still, Redford and Pitt's combined star wattage should assure a $40 million opening.
Then there's Martin Lawrence's time-travel comedy ''Black Knight,'' in which the funnyman finds himself transported back to the medieval era. With films like ''Big Momma's House' and ''Bad Boys,'' Lawrence has proven his star power, but he's not infallible, as we learned with this summer's ''What's the Worst That Could Happen,'' which grossed just $32 million overall. But ''Black Knight'' seems like a return to his more promising brand of crowd-pleasing comedy, which should amount to a king-size $25 million debut for this armored time traveler. Let the box office jousting begin.
