REEL DEAL Before the second installment of ''Rings'' hits theaters next Christmas, the franchise will be hit by a Miramax spoof. The studio's Dimension Films arm announced it's developing ''Scary Movie 3: Episode I -- Lord of the Brooms,'' to be released next fall. As the unwieldy title suggests, the film will also parody the ''Harry Potter' and ''Star Wars'' series. As with the first two ''Scary Movies,'' with their ''Scream'' send-ups, Miramax chiefs Bob and Harvey Weinstein are biting the hand that feeds them, since they're credited as executive producers on the ''Rings'' movies, on which they helped get the ball rolling before New Line snapped up the project.
STARS AND STRIPES Onetime Marine reservist Drew Carey spent the weekend entertaining U.S. troops in Kandahar, Afghanistan, along with old-style USO performers Wayne Newton and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Carey was almost one-upped in laughs by Sgt. Thomas Michael Corcoran, whose scarf Carey autographed. When an officer's wife remarked that Corcoran would probably never wash that scarf again, he replied, "Trust me, none of my stuff is getting washed these days."
Coolio just returned from visiting the troops, where he spent his tour being driven around by armed guards. "It didn't bother me," said the rapper. "I got people driving next to me with guns every day. I'm from L.A.''
SOUND BITE The Scottish highlanders who've reaped the benefits of increased tourism since Madonna and Guy Ritchie got married on their turf a year ago are honoring the Material Girl with their own material tribute: a custom-designed tartan pattern. The pop tartan is a plaid combination of blue, yellow, white, and purple, and has been listed with the Scottish Tartans Society Register. Does this mean that, a year from now, Ashley Judd gets her own pattern too?
