SHOULDERING THE MOVIE Spears' (with Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning) film debut should have young wanna-bes flocking to the theater

Britney Spears in ''Crossroads'' (February 15)

Character name Lucy
Dyes hair brown? No freaking way.
The story Britney plays an ordinary teenager (yeah, right) who yearns to be a singer and to see her long-absent mother (a cleverly cast Kim Cattrall -- ''Sex in the City'''s Samantha). In a road trip to L.A. with two childhood friends, Britney gets both her wishes -- and finds love and independence along the way.
Ad Tagline ''A story about the dreams that drive us.''
Sample Britney dialogue ''What we have is now -- and right now, we have each other.''
Soundtrack album None. Last year, the ''On the Line'' soundtrack (released by Britney's label, Jive Records) flopped as badly as the movie. This time around, Jive is letting Spears' most recent album, ''Britney,'' double as a de facto soundtrack. In the movie, Brit's character conveniently performs tracks from the album, including a karaoke cover of ''I Love Rock 'n' Roll.''
Movie's trading price on the Hollywood Stock Exchange: $18.36
Britney's own trading price (as a recording artist) $140.94
Prognosis ''On the Line'''s box office performance (it grossed less than five million dollars) appears to be bad news for Britney. But the power of her mega-stardom (and Bob-Dole-approved drool appeal) can't be underestimated, even if the same combo seldom worked box-office magic for her idol Madonna.
Walk-outs and/or inappropriate laughter at a New York advance screening? Some scenes invoked inadvertent giggles, but the audience -- packed with young Spears-worshippers -- cheered and clapped for ''Crossroads'' at the end.
