B
Once again, Woody Allen delivers an homage to vintage cinema -- here it's a screwball comedy about an insurance investigator and his sworn enemy, an efficiency expert (Helen Hunt), who fall under the hypnotic spell of an immoral stage magician (David Ogden Stiers). Though neatly plotted and brisk, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion feels oddly hollow; for a juicier tribute to silver-screen magic, rent Allen's 1985 gem, ''The Purple Rose of Cairo.''
