LEGAL BRIEFS Winona Ryder's alleged five-finger shopping spree has led to four felony charges: one count each of grand theft, commercial burglary, vandalism, and possession of a controlled substance. She was arrested Dec. 12 at the Beverly Hills Saks Fifth Avenue department store for allegedly trying to make off with nearly $4,800 worth of merchandise. Employees reported spotting her snipping the price and security tags from the goods (hence the vandalism charge). Police also found a bottle of the narcotic pain reliever Oxycodone. Ryder's attorney insists that she has a prescription for the painkiller, though she didn't have it with her at the time and has not said what ailment she needs the medication for.

''We are shocked at what appear to be grossly exaggerated charges. We look forward to the opportunity to explain and resolve these allegations,'' said Ryder's publicist. (One early reported explanation: She was doing research for an upcoming movie role. Another, recently reported by E!, is that she stepped outside for a smoke and planned to return and continue shopping.) Prosecutors want to increase her bail from $20,000 to $30,000. Ryder remains free, however, and is due back in court Friday for arraignment. She faces a maximum of three years and eight months behind bars....

Brad Renfro, who did time in juvenile detention in the movie ''Sleepers,'' is behind bars, having turned himself in to Florida authorities after violating his probation with a drunk-driving arrest in his hometown of Knoxville, Tenn., three weeks ago. Renfro, 19, had tried to steal a yacht from a Fort Lauderdale pier in August 2000, but had failed to untie the boat from its moorings and damaged its stern. He'd been sentenced to two years probation and had to pay $4,000 in damages. On Jan. 14, however, he was arrested near his home for driving without a license and public intoxication. Renfro was also charged with underage drinking in Knoxville last spring. He turned himself in to Broward County authorities on Thursday hoping to avoid jail time, but the judge said, ''The fact that you're back here accused of a crime is grounds to detain you.'' The ''Ghost World'' actor faces a hearing this week, at which time he will be given the option of three months in rehab or nine months in jail.

TROPHY TIME Early voting is in for the Razzies, the Golden Raspberry Foundation's annual awards for the year's worst achievements in filmmaking. An early, um, winner is Tom Green, who, thanks to ''Freddy Got Fingered'' is a candidate for worst film, director, and screenplay, while up for worst couple is ''Tom Green and any animal he abuses.'' Also in the running for worst couple: Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz in ''Vanilla Sky,'' Sylvester Stallone and Burt Reynolds in ''Driven,'' and Mariah Carey's breasts in ''Glitter.'' ''I would say she's got a lock on best actress,'' says John Wilson, who founded the Razzies 22 years ago. ''She's the female equivalent of 'Battlefield Earth.''' Final nominations (as decided by a panel of 507 journalists, industry insiders, and Internet voters) will be announced Feb. 11 and winners named on March 23, each timed to upstage similar Oscar events by one day.
