The rare movie musical with real rapture in it. For the electrifying first hour, director Bill Condon stages this candy-colored roman à clef about the rise of the Supremes and Motown as a single, flowing eruption of storytelling energy. Jennifer Hudson's big number is grandly shattering, but since the characters are archetypes, the drama that follows is a bit hollow.
