B-
The Hootenanny television show presented mostly white folksingers to a pre-British Invasion mass America: in the DVD collection The Best of Hootenanny, Judy Collins is insipidly smug, but Ian & Sylvia are bracingly sexy harmonizers, and the parade of pale, earnest faces intoning mostly black blues, folk, and gospel tunes is prim fun. Among the few comedians salted into the mix, Woody Allen's horny inferiority-complex persona suggests the subtext the musicians dared not hoot about.
