Canadian Ron Sexsmith has long borne the torch for old-fashioned singer-songwriter values, crafting exquisite midtempo pop songs, with perfect Beatles-esque melodic symmetries and melancholy observations about the big stuff: love, death, the passage of time. Time Being is not quite his best album, but it offers lots of the usual low-key beauty, as Sexsmith's wistful tenor drifts above shimmering guitar arpeggios. But the prettiness conceals dark tidings — check out ''The Grim Trucker,'' a gothic mini-epic about a driver carting pigs to a slaughterhouse.
