The Saw films are a cut or should that be a slash? above most
frightfests in terms of both plotting and philosophical ruminations. But
at times movie No. 3 in the series seems to forget that its primary
raison d'être is to scare the pants off people. Even the goriest
sequence in which a kidnapped doctor must perform brain surgery on the
franchise's chief villain, Jigsaw is more for fans of ER and/or power
tools than frights.
EXTRAS Deleted scenes, docs, and three amiable filmmakers' commentaries (''That
transition was Scorsese-worthy!'').
