Five more sequels couldn't shed light on this fuzzy backstory of a killer curse stemming from a double murder-suicide. Grudge 2 plunks Tamblyn (as Gellar's sister) into a thankless role, and three intertwining stories favor gore-free scares over exposition. Oh, forget the details. The ghosts will make you jump.
EXTRAS Deleted scenes and shorts, plus four featurettes that paint Japanese director Takashi Shimizu as a creative martyr, decrying the demands of U.S. viewers: ''I had to argue all the time with the American producers.''
