Near the end of Tideland, heroine Ferland tells dad Bridges: ''We'll be a
happy family!'' As Bridges, by then, is not only dead but has been
stuffed by a mad taxidermist, this seems arguable. Nor is that the only
doubt-inducing aspect of a movie that tracks the semi-romantic bond
between Ferland's prepubescent orphan and a mentally challenged adult.
Still, Terry Gilliam's grim fairy tale is another fantastic(al) showcase
for his visual talents.
