On Feb. 1, 2003, after a fortnight in orbit with the International Space Station, the space shuttle Columbia exploded in a fireball. While the world mourned the loss of seven brave astronauts, few understood the plight of the three lonely souls still stranded on the orbiting platform. In Too Far From Home, writer Chris Jones absorbingly recounts how both U.S. and Russian space agencies raced to rescue these men. He also examines life aboard a space station, from the challenges of zero-g defecation to the literally eye-popping effects of explosive decompression. Even the hardiest of armchair adventurers will be glad to have two feet on terra firma.
