Mary (Whale Rider's Castle-Hughes) and Joseph (Oscar Isaac) await the birth of baby Jesus and make the treacherous trip to Bethlehem in the visually stunning yet unadventurous Nativity Story. The tale is dramatic and even frightening (Herod's slaughter of infant boys is brutal, if carefully edited), but the characters are placid to the point of being maddeningly dull. Those wondering how director Catherine Hardwicke went from Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown to this mediocre epic will be disappointed: There's no commentary, or any Extras. C
