+ Trading in his leather codpiece for leather pants, 300's Gerard Butler will play antihero Snake Plissken in a remake of Escape From New York, the 1981 Kurt Russell cult classic. Set yet again in a dystopian not-too-distant future, the new film will also explore ''how Snake became Snake,'' explains producer Neal Moritz. ''It's almost an origin story.''

+ Don Cheadle (Reign Over Me) is attached to direct and star in a biopic being developed about jazz pioneer Miles Davis. Raves Cheadle: ''His life is relevant to so many in music that it's a great honor [for my name] to even be suggested in the same breath [as his].''

+ Grey's Anatomy doc Katherine Heigl will don 27 Dresses as a woman who's been a bridesmaid, yep, 27 times. ''Katherine is beautiful,'' admits director Anne Fletcher (Step Up), ''so the fact that [her character]can't get a man is shocking! But it's not about her beauty; it's about what she thinks of herself.'' — with additional reporting by Joshua Rich
