Matthew Bourne, mastermind of the famed male-centric Swan Lake, has re-imagined Tim Burton's '90s film as a dialogue-free performance. The colorful costumes and state-of-the-art sets in Edward Scissorhands are a sheer delight. But Act 1 plays less like a ballet than an overly broad kids' pantomime. There's more genuine dance in Act 2, including group routines both comic and energetic. Oddly, the show is least sharp in traditional dances, like the final duet between Edward and übercheerleader Kim, which, despite the soaring score, never quite lifts off.
