Jack Goes Boating (2007)

With an Oscar in his pocket, Philip Seymour Hoffman could probably do whatever he pleases on stage. That he chose to star in a tiny, four-character play called Jack Goes Boating with his own LAByrinth Theater Company is a heartening sign that the actor remains too variable to pin down. As Jack, a grimacing, shlubby limo driver with white-boy dreads who gets set up romantically by his best pals, Hoffman is masterful, as are his castmates. The performances help make up for Bob Glaudini's unfocused play, which feels too scattershot in its observations about love between shrinking souls.
