Nick Cave's supposedly new band isn't really new, at least not in terms of personnel: He's been working with bassist Martyn Casey, drummer Jim Sclavunos, and violinist Warren Ellis for years. What's different is this Grinderman's loose and ragged atmosphere — no gentle lullabies with pretty female backing vocals here. Instead, the band whips up an unusually fierce racket, and with Cave in finest tortured-yowl form, this is some of the singer's rawest music since he fronted the Birthday Party in the '80s.
