Lead Performance: Shadows Fall; Genre: Metal

The squiggly metalcore subgenre, combining guitar-geek precision with thrashy bellowing, is starting to convert the emo set. Shadows Fall would like to push it into the top 10 via triumphant choruses, Judas Priestly twin-guitar solos, and singer Brian Fair's dreadlocks. But translating extreme to mainstream is an alchemical art — Threads of Life unravels because it sounds torn between mosh pit and movie soundtrack (and get ready to hoist your lighters to the power ballad ''Another Hero Lost''). Still, such inner turmoil might suit those black-clad teens fine.
