When a sportswriter (Josh Hartnett) stumbles upon a homeless codger (Samuel L. Jackson) who claims to be an ex-champion boxer, he thinks he's found his career-defining story. The only problem? The bum's got a case of the Pinocchios. Champ is based on a true story, although director Rod Lurie (The Contender) ''fictionalized it a little bit,'' says Hartnett, who played an ex-fighter in last year's The Black Dahlia. ''We made the story about the relationship between fathers and sons.'' (August 3)
