Ethan Hawke was only 21 when he began writing his first novel, a romance about William (Mark Webber), a young actor who falls for a beautiful musician (Sandino Moreno). And 15 years or so later, when it came time to adapt his own work for the big screen, he turned to Laura Linney and Michelle Williams to play William's mother and ex-love in what Hawke likens to an ''old-school, early-'70s film.'' Says the writer-director: ''I was looking to cast soulful people. I don't know what exactly that word means. But you know it when you see it.'' (August 24)
