Mismatched pals — an earnest, washed-up acting legend (Morgan Freeman) and a sassy Spanish express-lane checkout girl (Spanglish's Paz Vega) — spend a day together: She exposes him to discount shopping; he dispenses tips for her job ''audition.'' Ten Items or Less tries too hard to be profound (Freeman: ''This is our pact: We live. We work. We're just getting started''), but Freeman and Vega display genuine chemistry in. EXTRAS In a Q&A, writer-director Brad Silberling jokes of his tiny indie: ''Instead of Strangers on a Train,'' he says, ''it's Strangers at Arby's and Target.'' B-
