The punk priestess cherry-picks a dozen (mostly) classic rock songs for her first-ever covers set, with bemusingly bland results. From a rote version of the Jimi Hendrix Experience's ''Are You Experienced?'' to a too-faithful romp through the Rolling Stones' ''Gimme Shelter,'' almost nothing on Twelve evokes Patti Smith's old ''Go, Rimbaud!'' chutzpah. Sole exception: her trademark poetic rant on Nirvana's ''Smells Like Teen Spirit,'' which only makes you wish she'd ranted up enough new material for an original album and scrapped this one.
