EW.com's coverage from the Great White Way and beyond
Credits
Opening Date: Oct 30, 2006; Lead Performance: Raul Esparza; Writer: Stephen Sondheim; Director: John Doyle
Stephen Sondheim's 1970 exploration of love and marriage gets deconstructed with director John Doyle's ongoing musical-theater experiment, but his actors-as-orchestra trick doesn't work as well as it did in last year's spectacular Sweeney Todd. (Mental patients carrying tubas are easy to buy; uptight yuppies take some getting used to.) Still, Company has moments of unquestionable brilliance, and Raúl Esparza's turn as überbachelor Bobby is so mesmerizing, the cast could be carrying monkeys. If you get through ''Being Alive'' without crying, you're a hell of a lot stronger than we are.
