PLUMMER ROLE The actor (left, with Brian Dennehy) adds snap to the new revival of Inherit the Wind

Inherit the Wind, the 1955 chestnut based on the Scopes ''monkey trial,'' is the kind of broad pop-history play that's best viewed with a pack of seventh graders, followed by earnest discussion afterward. Still timely and still syrupy today, the show always lives or dies by the actors squaring off over Darwin in the courtroom. This round is redeemed by Christopher Plummer, effortlessly crowd-pleasing as the floppy-haired, red-faced Drummond, who sticks up for ''the individual human mind'' while snapping his suspenders and giggling at his own jokes.
