Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play
Boyd Gaines, Journey's End
Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
BrĂan F. O'Byrne, The Coast of Utopia
Christopher Plummer, Inherit the Wind
Liev Schreiber, Talk Radio
PREDICTED WINNER Frank Langella
Schreiber's acerbic shock jock will get some votes, but Langella's more or less a lock. His interpretation of the disgraced ex-prez goes way beyond mere impersonation.
Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play
Eve Best, A Moon for the Misbegotten
Swoosie Kurtz, Heartbreak House
Angela Lansbury, Deuce
Vanessa Redgrave, The Year of Magical Thinking
Julie White, The Little Dog Laughed
PREDICTED WINNER Julie White
Little Dog may be long-closed, but White's hilarious hell-on-wheels super-agent lives on. I may be out on a limb here, but I think she'll trump sentimental fave (and four-time winner) Lansbury.
Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical
Michael Cerveris, LoveMusik
Raúl Esparza, Company
Jonathan Groff, Spring Awakening
Gavin Lee, Mary Poppins
David Hyde Pierce, Curtains
PREDICTED WINNER Raúl Esparza
As Sondheim's perpetual bachelor Bobby, he earned raves and elicited tears. (Potential spoiler: Hyde Pierce. The murder mystery Curtains may be a less-than-stellar vehicle, but he has a genuine star turn.)
Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical
Laura Bell Bundy, Legally Blonde The Musical
Christine Ebersole, Grey Gardens
Audra McDonald, 110 in the Shade
Debra Monk, Curtains
Donna Murphy, LoveMusik
PREDICTED WINNER Christine Ebersole
Even though four-time winner McDonald wowed critics and audiences as Shade's rain-soaked spinster, Ebersole has the edge: She plays two parts. Real people (social-climbing soprano Big Edie and turban-clad curiosity Little Edie). And she does them both brilliantly.
