As Sondheim's perpetual bachelor Bobby, he earned raves and elicited tears. (Potential spoiler: Hyde Pierce. The murder mystery Curtains may be a less-than-stellar vehicle, but he has a genuine star turn.)

Even though four-time winner McDonald wowed critics and audiences as Shade's rain-soaked spinster, Ebersole has the edge: She plays two parts. Real people (social-climbing soprano Big Edie and turban-clad curiosity Little Edie). And she does them both brilliantly.
