[BOLD {MARY POPPINS}] Our predicted winner for Best Scenic Design of a Musical
Joan Marcus

Best Scenic Design of a Musical
Bob Crowley, Mary Poppins
Christine Jones, Spring Awakening
Anna Louizos, High Fidelity
Allen Moyer, Grey Gardens

PREDICTED WINNER Mary Poppins
Honestly, more people will vote for Louizos' record-filled High Fidelity than will admit it, and Moyer's work in Gardens — particularly the creatively cluttered Act 2 set — is quite good. But Poppins is my pick. I didn't love the show (not many did), but I was certainly charmed by the creative design. Come on, people! Throw Disney a bone!

Best Costume Design of a Play
Ti Green and Melly Still, Coram Boy
Jane Greenwood, Heartbreak House
Santo Loquasto, Inherit the Wind
Catherine Zuber, The Coast of Utopia

PREDICTED WINNER The Coast of Utopia
Three plays, that huge cast, period outfits...Zuber — a winner in 2005 for The Light in the Piazza and in 2006 for Awake and Sing! — is a shoo-in.

Best Costume Design of a Musical
Gregg Barnes, Legally Blonde The Musical
Bob Crowley, Mary Poppins
Susan Hilferty, Spring Awakening
William Ivey Long, Grey Gardens

PREDICTED WINNER Grey Gardens
Turbans. Leopard prints. Ripped fishnets. Do you really need to hear more?

Best Book of a Musical
Curtains (Rupert Holmes & Peter Stone)
Grey Gardens (Doug Wright)
Legally Blonde The Musical (Heather Hach)
Spring Awakening (Steven Sater)

PREDICTED WINNER Grey Gardens
Book and score often go together, but I'm predicting a split here: Tony/Pulitzer winner Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife) simply had more to do with Gardens. Sure, he based it on the 1975 Maysles' brothers documentary, but that whole flashback first act? Entirely his own. Sater's adaptation of Wedekind's 1891 German expressionist drama was pretty straightforward by comparison.
