C-
Three years after proving she was a movie star as well as a music icon in the Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues, Diana Ross flailed in this glossy melodrama, playing a model/fashion designer in love with pious political activist Williams (her Blues costar). The up-from-poverty theme is rendered banal by Motown founder Berry Gordy, who turned out to be a lousy director. Anthony Perkins is Mahogany's saving grace as an arrogant, manipulative, and therefore irresistible photographer. EXTRAS None.
