After 1966's male-centric Alfie, director Lewis Gilbert took on the fairer sex with this hit play-turned-romantic comedy, Shirley Valentine. Tired of her unappreciative husband, British housewife Shirley Bradshaw (Pauline Collins) absconds to Greece in search of meaning and mojo. So what's it all about? Talented actors stumbling through clichéd plot twists (Shirley's nemeses actually envy her), flat one-liners (''Marriage is like the Middle East — there's no solution''), and pithy self-affirmations (''I've fallen in love with the idea of living'') that undermine any genuine feminist sentiments. EXTRAS None. C
