Steve Geng is a recovering addict whose AIDS-era chronicle of needles shared and petty crimes committed is both familiar and tediously told. Thick as Thieves' primary value is the information Geng gives us about his sister, the brilliant humorist Veronica Geng, who died of a brain tumor in 1997. They were, off and on, as thick as thieves, comforting each other through difficult lives, but Veronica's, as a writer and editor for The New Yorker, provides Steve's only strong narrative thread. Even so, his memory and ear for remembered conversations don't do her justice. Buy Veronica's Love Trouble Is My Business instead.
