Invisible Prey (2007)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Release Date: May 15, 2007; Writer: John Sandford; Genres: Fiction, Mystery and Thriller; Publisher: Putnam

Invisible Prey — the crackling addition to John Sandford's Prey series finds detective Lucas Davenport investigating the murder of a Minnesota grande dame during a home-invasion robbery. As Davenport uncovers a link between the killing and a conspiracy to sell rare antiques, he juggles a separate investigation into a smarmy politician suspected of statutory rape. Eventually, the two cases collide. This installment introduces a trio of such vivid new villains — one emaciated scoundrel is described as ''a Manga cartoon character when the crime boss fetches her out of the dungeon''— that the normally charismatic Davenport actually seems dull in comparison. B+
