Long journeys, lonely people, and beautiful desert-rock tunes predominate on this quartet's seventh CD, Thirteen Cities. The big-skied, occasionally mariachi-infused result has cameos from notables like Calexico's Joey Burns. It also showcases the literary ambitions of Richmond Fontaine frontman Willy Vlautin, whose first novel, Motel Life, was published earlier this year and whose economic Raymond Carver-esque way with words only seems to fail him here in the song-titling department (see ''$87 and a Guilty Conscience That Gets Worse the Longer I Go'').
