All About

Keira Knightley

Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace (1999)

THE ROLE At age 14, Knightley played Sabé, a look-alike handmaiden of Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman) who poses as a decoy for her endangered mistress. Though the role was hardly strenuous — she barely spoke a word, just wore that mask-like face of makeup — she was in good company: Among the starlets who have also appeared as handmaidens are Sofia Coppola and Rose Byrne (in Episode II).

WHAT EW SAID Owen Gleiberman: The forces of good and evil have a few nasty run-ins, but the primary struggle played out in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace is that of George Lucas nervously fighting to give everyone in the galaxy their money's worth.
