...got my heart broken

In college I got abruptly dumped by my high school boyfriend [turns out he was sleeping with his roommate Mark but I didn't learn that 'til months later] and my hours of sobbing and pitifully mewling "Whhhhyyyy?" were punctuated by (gulp) ''I Will Always Love You'' by Whitney Houston. (I wore out the cassette single on that one — best $2.99 I ever spent.) Not to knock Dolly Parton — I prefer her version now, but Whitney was there for me when I needed her. — H.

Whitney Houston's version of ''I Will Always Love You'' was everywhere in the Fall of 1992. I saw my then-fiancé off to Japan. It ended shortly thereafter. It ending turned out to be a blessing in disguise, but I really cannot hear that song without being ill. That may or may not be because I associate it with that girl. — Ron Mexico

Why it had to be playing right after we broke up I don't know. It was freakin' 1999!! Oh... OK, I was listening to light hits to TAKE MY MIND OFF YOU. — My Favorite Onion
