Think of this Sidney Lumet-directed drama as a British Cool Hand Luke. Sean Connery, mustached and tersely masculine, plays a WWII sergeant sentenced to a North African military stockade for striking another officer. There, the men (including Ossie Davis as a Jamaican soldier) are forced by sadistic superiors to climb the titular, man-made hill in the killing heat. Rebel-with-a-cause clichés are mostly averted by sturdy acting, Oswald Morris' vivid black-and-white cinematography, and a satisfyingly bleak conclusion in The Hills. EXTRAS A puffy making-of doc. B+
