The jigsaw-like love story of A Little Night Music is a lark (Elizabeth Taylor is bedding two married men, one won't sleep with his virgin wife, and that guy's son pines for his own stepmother!). Stephen Sondheim's songs are lush and whimsical (''Men are stupid, men are vain/Love's disgusting, love's insane''). But why the stilted close-ups and too-shadowy lighting? This movie of the 1973 musical (based on Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night) falls as flat as Liz's high notes in ''Send in the Clowns.'' EXTRAS None. C-
