On June 8, Dermot Mulroney (Georgia Rule), 43, filed for divorce from
his wife of nearly 17 years, Catherine Keener (The 40 Year-Old Virgin),
48, citing irreconcilable differences. He's seeking joint custody of
their son Clyde, 7.
EXPECTING
Music exec Tommy Mottola, 57, will welcome his first child with his
wife, Latin singer Thalia, 35, this fall.
AILING
Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora, 47, entered an L.A. treatment
facility on June 6 for undisclosed reasons. He is still expected to
perform with his band June 19 on the Today show.
COURTS
Fifteen supporting actors in the Lord of the Rings trilogy sued New Line
Cinema on May 30 in L.A., claiming they're owed 5 percent of the
estimated $100 million made from merchandising based on their
characters. Two years ago, director Peter Jackson filed his own suit
against New Line, contending that he was cheated out of upwards of $100
million in revenue.... Manhattan businessman Jeffrey Lemerond sued Fox
studios on June 1 for using his image in last year's Borat without his
consent. He was seen in the movie being chased down an NYC street by
leading man Sacha Baron Cohen, who was trying to hug random people.
Lemerond seeks unspecified damages. ''The claim is completely without
merit,'' Fox said in a statement.... On June 8 in London, George Michael,
43, pleaded guilty to a charge that he was driving while unfit. The
singer was arrested in October after police found him slumped behind the
wheel of his car, which was blocking an intersection. Michael's license
was revoked for two years and he was sentenced to 100 hours of community
service.... Superproducer Timbaland (né Timothy Mosley), 35, was briefly
detained on June 10 after allegedly attacking a man in Cologne, Germany.
The man reportedly became irate and used a racial slur after spotting
Timbaland in town for a Justin Timberlake gig talking to his girlfriend.
A fight broke out, and the man was hospitalized for injuries to his rib
cage. Timbaland's rep had no comment.
DEATHS
Frankie Abernathy, 25, whose struggle with cystic fibrosis was
chronicled on MTV's The Real World: San Diego, of the disease, June 9,
in Milwaukee.... Filmmaker Ousmane Sembéne (Xala), 84, who's regarded as
the father of African cinema, after a long illness, June 10, in Dakar,
Senegal.... Don Herbert, 89, best known as Mr. Wizard, the host of
popular children's science shows, of bone cancer, June 12, in Bell
Canyon, Calif.... Actress Mala Powers, 75, who starred as Roxane in the
1950 film Cyrano de Bergerac, of leukemia, June 11, in Burbank.
'Spring' Fever at the Tony Awards
''Oh, God, what a bitch!'' sing the troubled teens in Spring Awakening. But now that Spring won eight statuettes including Best Musical at the June 10 Tonys in NYC, they might have to change their tune. ''It's been a really wild ride,'' says composer Duncan Sheik. Katie Couric's struggling CBS newscast is making headlines again: On June 11, former CBS anchorman Dan Rather told MSNBC that the network is hurting its evening news by ''dumbing it down and tarting it up.'' CBS chief Les Moonves retaliated on June 12, calling Rather's remarks ''sexist.'' Not to be outdone, Rather fired back in a statement that same day: ''This is not about gender. This is about leadership at the very top. They started weakening the role of hard news long before Katie arrived.'' CBS Evening News exec producer Rick Kaplan disagrees: ''People are very disappointed in Dan. They don't like hearing they aren't doing news because they damn well are,'' he tells EW.
