In the opening 15 minutes of this tea-and-crumpets romance, Beatrix Potter, a thirtysomething spinster (Renée Zellweger as an Edwardian Bridget Jones), finds a publisher for Peter Rabbit and a potential husband all in one bumbling dreamboat (Ewan McGregor at his goofiest). Such instant resolutions ratchet up the anticipation for fascinating plot turns that never materialize in Miss Potter. This pioneering female author comes off as a one-dimensional do-gooder who finds happy endings around every corner. EXTRAS A stuffy talking-head doc praises Potter's pluck. C+
