Innocent as Sin (2007)

In this odd hybrid of paced suspense with Harlequin romance, but the two elements never mesh. Shortly after Kayla, a feisty young investment banker, realizes how sinister her Siberian gunrunner client really is, she tumbles into bed with her rescuer, Rand, a tortured young painter trying to avenge the death of his identical (and ruggedly handsome, of course) twin brother, Reed. The mystery in Innocent as Sin is decent, if stock, and Elizabeth Lowell (a.k.a. Ann Maxwell) has a gift for easy, natural dialogue. But the Kayla-Rand relationship distracts from the action. Lowell could learn a thing or two from genre master Mary Stewart. C+
