Superbad Boys
Michael Cera and Jonah Hill
WHY THEM Cera, who played George Michael on Fox TV's short-lived, much-loved Arrested Development, is a master of the awkward pause and the hesitant stammer; Hill, fresh off of a role in Knocked Up, can improvise raucous riffs on cue. In the raunchy high school comedy Superbad, out Aug. 17, the two join forces as a couple of sex-obsessed buddies on a quest to procure booze.
SUPERBUZZ Early screenings of Superbad, along with an uncensored trailer, have built anticipation for the movie, which is produced by Knocked Up director Judd Apatow and co-written by Seth Rogen. ''The movie plays like a rock concert,'' says Hill. ''Three old people get up and leave in the first five minutes, and the rest of the crowd has the greatest time watching it.''
KEEPING IT REAL With Superbad, says Hill, great effort was made to avoid teen-movie clichés: ''In every movie about high school, the jocks are football players and the nerds have suspenders and are called Boner.'' ''It's pronounced Bonner!'' whines Cera. ''How many times do I have to tell you?''
NEXT Cera will soon start shooting the Harold Ramis comedy Year One with Jack Black; Hill has a supporting role in Evan Almighty and has written a comedy, in which he plans to star, called The Middle Child.
SECRET AMBITION Hill: ''To write one episode of The Simpsons.'' Cera: ''I can't wait to be old. It sucks that I can only do, like, high school roles when I want to do the roles Bill Murray is doing now.''
SECRET TALENT Says Hill, ''I can cry a lot I'm very sensitive.'' As for Cera? ''I can spell blood with my fingers,'' he says, curling the fingers of both hands into the shapes of the letters B-L-O-O-D. ''I don't like to wear red, so that's how I tell people I'm in the Bloods.''
