The only person more hated than a female child killer may be the guy defending her. Inspired by the true story of a lifelong prisoners' advocate (Broadbent) who in 1965 took up the parole cause of murderer Myra Hindley (Morton), this U.K.-made movie features solid acting and an excellent script by Peter Morgan (The Queen). Yet Longford assumes preexisting outrage toward Hindley that Americans simply don't possess, weakening the film's overall emotional impact. EXTRAS include a slightly informative commentary by Morgan and director Tom Hooper. B-
