A wealthy Scandinavian family gather in a country home for a young woman's nuptials. A handsome stranger wanders into the celebration and fixes his gaze on the bride's mother. Her eyes widen in shock and recognition. At that moment, Danish director Susanne Bier's Oscar-nominated After the Wedding seems poised to expose the dark secrets beneath a family's genteel surface. But Bier guides the story into gentler territory. The wedding interloper is Jacob (Casino Royale's Mads Mikkelsen, right, with Sidse Babett Knudsen), an aid worker living in India who has traveled back to his native Denmark to plead for funds from the father of the bride, a bullying businessman named Jorgen (Rolf Lassgard). Jacob's connection to Jorgen's family is only gradually revealed, and the characters' motivations are never quite what they appear to be, but the talented cast is up to the challenge — Lassgard in particular surprises right up until his devastating final scene. By the time Jorgen's arrogant facade falls to pieces, it's almost a shock to discover that Bier has made an old-fashioned melodrama, with the kind of skill and humanity that deserve to be back in style.
