Sirens of the Ditch (2007)

EW's GRADE
A-

Details Release Date: Jul 10, 2007; Lead Performance: Jason Isbell; Genre: Rock

Former Drive-By Truckers singer-guitarist Jason Isbell unhitched his wagon from that band's Southern-rock-blaring 18-wheeler in April. But this satisfying mix of guitar-driven stompers (''Brand New Kind of Actress,'' ''Shotgun Wedding'') and plaintive laments (''Try,'' ''Grown'') is reminiscent of the DBTs. The group's attention to sociopolitical matters also seems to inform Isbell's compositions on Sirens of the Ditch, such as the heartbreaking rock waltz ''Dress Blues,'' a worthy addition to the tragic, ever-lengthening list of songs about the Iraq conflict.
