We last heard from indie lyricist Pharoahe Monch in 1999, when ''Simon Says'' became
a surprise mainstream hit. Hip-hop's landscape has shifted significantly
during the interminable wait for the follow-up LP; fortunately, Monch's
ferocious mic skills haven't changed a bit. His intricate rhymes in Desire (''I give birth to verses in churches with no confession/So please pardon my
post-partum depression'') ricochet gracefully off gospel-inspired
backdrops as he attacks music-biz myopia and American gun culture. It's
this year's rap album to beat. A
